Stand Up for the First Amendment and a Free Press

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Barrett

From: A constituent in Hartland, MI

April 26

I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned citizen to express my profound alarm over the escalating efforts to roll back protections for journalists under the current Republican administration. A truly free and independent press is not a partisan issue, nor can we allow it to become one. Truth is truth whether you believe it or not. This is a cornerstone of our democracy. The First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of the press exists to ensure that power is held accountable, that truth can be pursued without fear, and that the public remains informed. Undermining journalistic freedoms through intimidation, censorship, or weakening legal protections poses a grave threat not just to individual reporters, but to the very health and resilience of our democratic institutions. History has shown, time and again, that the erosion of press freedom often precedes the erosion of other fundamental rights. It is the duty of Congress to defend these rights vigorously, regardless of political affiliation. I urge you to take immediate and decisive action to protect the First Amendment rights of journalists. Stand against any effort that seeks to silence or weaken the press. Support legislation that strengthens protections for journalists and affirms the essential role of a free press in a democratic society. Our democracy depends on it. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I look forward to seeing you stand in defense of our Constitution and the freedoms it enshrines.
