Demand Independent Investigation and Congressional Oversight of Renee Good Shooting

To: Sen. Warren, Rep. Lynch, Sen. Markey

From: A constituent in North Easton, MA

January 11

The fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good by an ICE officer last week demands immediate congressional action to ensure accountability and restore public trust. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused Good of domestic terrorism just hours after her death, and the administration deployed hundreds of additional federal agents to Minnesota before any investigation could establish the facts. This rush to judgment undermines confidence in the FBI investigation and raises serious questions about whether justice will be served. Video footage reportedly filmed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross shows Good smiling and saying "That's fine dude...I'm not mad" before the fatal shots were fired. This evidence contradicts the administration's immediate characterization of the incident and highlights why an independent investigation is essential. When Secretary Noem appeared on CNN, she was caught changing her story and refused to answer questions about why the administration immediately defended the officer involved. Congressional oversight is being actively obstructed. Three Minnesota lawmakers, Representatives Kelly Morrison, Ilhan Omar, and Angie Craig, were turned away from a Minneapolis detention facility on Saturday. In response, Secretary Noem issued a memo requiring seven days' notice before lawmakers can visit immigration facilities, claiming security concerns while simultaneously dismissing legitimate oversight as "circus-like publicity stunts." This is an unacceptable barrier to Congress's constitutional duty. I urge you to take immediate action to protect congressional oversight authority and demand an independent investigation into Renee Good's death. Congress must reject any restrictions on lawmakers' ability to conduct unannounced facility visits and ensure that federal law enforcement operations are subject to proper accountability. The American people deserve answers about what happened and assurance that no one is above the law.
