I’m writing to urge you to support and cosponsor the JAWBONE Act. Government officials should be able to share information and enforce the law—but they shouldn’t be able to use the pressure of their office to push platforms, broadcasters, or AI providers to suppress lawful speech.
The bill would give people a way to seek accountability when federal officials coerce a company to censor protected expression, even if the company resists. Its transparency provisions would also help bring covered government communications with these companies into public view. That matters because pressure behind closed doors can chill speech without the public ever knowing why it disappeared.
This is a bipartisan issue, not a partisan one. The ACLU, the Center for Democracy & Technology, and Public Knowledge support the bill, while emphasizing protections for free expression and the need to distinguish coercion from legitimate government communication. I hope you’ll help move it forward and preserve those safeguards.
Please support and cosponsor the JAWBONE Act. Americans should be able to trust that the government won’t use private companies as a back door to silence speech it could not lawfully ban itself.
