An Open Letter
To: Rep. Gomez, Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff
From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA
July 6
As your constituent, I am urging you to oppose any Farm Bill, farm aid package, or other farm-related legislation that fails to protect SNAP and help families afford food. More than 4 million people lost SNAP between July 2025 and March 2026. In just 13 states that report child-level data, approximately 808,000 children lost assistance. These losses follow approximately $187 billion in SNAP cuts enacted in last year’s budget reconciliation law—and many more families are expected to lose access to SNAP in the months and years ahead. Neither the House-passed Farm Bill nor the Senate Agriculture Committee’s newly released Farm Bill discussion draft reverse those cuts. They do not restore lost assistance, prevent additional benefit losses, or address the growing barriers that are pushing eligible families out of SNAP. The proposal also fails to delay or eliminate the unprecedented transfer of SNAP benefits and administrative costs onto states. New USDA data shows that most states will soon face massive new costs to continue providing SNAP, and some states are warning they may leave the SNAP program altogether. At a minimum, Congress must give EVERY state the same two-year delay for the harmful cost shift that was enacted for some in H.R. 1. Without action, states could be forced to cut food assistance, reduce other essential services, or create additional administrative barriers for families. Farmers facing rising costs and economic uncertainty are asking for meaningful assistance. Families who purchase the food they produce urgently need help too. Congress should not move billions of dollars in agricultural assistance while ignoring a national hunger crisis. SNAP helps children, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and low-income families purchase groceries. Food banks and local charities cannot replace the federal government’s responsibility to address hunger. Please vote against any farm-related legislation that does not delay the SNAP cost shift for every state. Instead, I urge you to reverse harmful SNAP cuts, prevent additional benefit losses, and help families put food on the table.
