Stand up for our environment

To: Rep. Issa, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Santee, CA

June 16, 2025

I’m a constituent from Santee as well as a disheartened environmentalist. I’m writing to urge you all to oppose H.R. 1, the House-passed budget reconciliation bill, and its harmful cuts to vital clean energy and climate programs. Specifically, I’m very concerned about • the gutting of crucial programs that protect our communities from air pollution, extreme weather, and other environmental risks, • the selling off of our public lands and waters in order to expand drilling and mining, • language from the REINS Act that will delay or prevent the implementation of critical climate and pollution regulations. Scientists are calling this the worst attack on our environment and climate in US history. This is going to drive up our energy bills (over $400 for the average American family (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/04/climate/electricity-prices-republican-big-beautiful-bill.html)), kill hundreds of thousands of clean energy jobs (https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/24/how-the-us-clean-energy-boom-could-go-bust-if-trumps-big-beautiful-bill-becomes-law.html), and let fossil fuel pollution continue unchecked. Clean energy is poised to be one of the greatest creators of new jobs and shared prosperity in US history – this bill takes an axe to it. Moreover, it includes extreme policies like the REINS Act (https://blogs.edf.org/climate411/2025/05/21/a-budget-bill-with-sweeping-attacks-on-safeguards-that-protect-americans/), which would block agencies from creating new climate safeguards. Americans overwhelmingly support clean energy (https://www.evergreenaction.com/press/new-poll-clean-energy-investments-are-overwhelmingly-popular-with-voters-across-the-electorate) and environmental protections (https://www.pewresearch.org/science/2023/06/28/majorities-of-americans-prioritize-renewable-energy-back-steps-to-address-climate-change/). Listen to scientists; listen to Americans. Stand up for our home before it is too late. Congress should pass a fair and responsible budget that helps working families and communities, not one that slashes our benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.
