I am writing you to voice my alarm about President-elect Trump's desire to circumvent the Senate's constitutionally-mandated advice and consent for his - in my opinion, outrageously unsuitable and horrific - nominations. Billionaires with minimal, if any, actual qualifications for the jobs beyond the fact that they provided support for his presidency. I acknowledge that as of January 3, 2025, the Democratic Party will be in the minority - an unfortunate situation given Trump's overly pervasive influence over most, if not all, Republican senators. I also acknowledge that some of Trump's nominees will likely be approved and confirmed. Regardless, I ask that you do your utmost to influence your Republican colleagues to:
1) do their job seriously as defenders of the Constitution and democracy.
2) carefully consider the qualifications of each candidate without just using a rubber stamp.
3) have the courage and spine to disapprove someone who's clearly inappropriate and/or compromised for the position. Trump was by far the worst president ever elected in my lifetime (I'm 77 years old) after he took office in 2017. And he's now on his way to becoming even worse than his first administration without having the democratically and constitutionally-oriented, experienced human guardrails in place to counter his authoritarian, fascist tendencies. My hope is that the US Senate will be at least one of those guardrails.
