I'm asking you to support the Sanders-Ocasio-Cortez data center moratorium. We need time to understand and secure powerful AI systems before they become impossible to control.
Tech companies are trapped in a prisoner's dilemma. Each one knows slowing down would be safer, but fears falling behind competitors. So they all race forward together, deploying systems whose decision-making we don't fully understand and whose future capabilities we can't predict. No single company can break this cycle without losing market position. Only government intervention can stop the race.
The existential risk is real. Once AI systems reach certain capability thresholds, we may lose the ability to maintain meaningful control. We don't get to rewind if we're wrong. We don't get a second chance to implement safeguards after these systems are already more capable than we anticipated. A temporary construction pause gives researchers and policymakers time to establish real safety standards before we lock in infrastructure that accelerates development we might not be able to reverse.
This moratorium breaks the prisoner's dilemma and buys us the time to verify these systems are safe before they reshape everything. Support it.
