Oppose DHS ICE Glasses and All Real-Time Biometric Surveillance

To: Rep. Casar, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Manor, TX

April 22

I need you to block funding for DHS's ICE Glasses project and introduce legislation banning real-time biometric surveillance by any government agency or corporation. The September 2027 deployment deadline means we have 17 months to stop this before it becomes operational. These smart glasses will let ICE agents scan every person they encounter on the street, comparing faces against driver's license and passport databases. This isn't about immigration enforcement. A DHS lawyer warned that "the reality is that a push in this direction affects all Americans, particularly protestors." The technology doesn't distinguish between citizens and immigrants. It identifies everyone. We already know ICE and Border Patrol agents in six states were caught using Meta's AI smart glasses without authorization, potentially violating DHS rules. Facial recognition has documented bias and error rates, especially affecting people of color. False matches will lead to wrongful detention with no recourse. No agency or private company should have roving surveillance capability that turns every street into a checkpoint. This technology eliminates the need for warrants, probable cause, or any legal process. Congress was notified but has stayed silent. That needs to change now. Defund this project and ban real-time biometric surveillance entirely.
