I am a constituent writing to ask you to cosponsor H. Res. 1586 and to support U.S. ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).H. Res. 1586 recognizes the 27th anniversary of Olmstead v. L.C. (1999), in which the Supreme Court held that unnecessary segregation of people with disabilities is discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The resolution affirms Congress’s intent, rooted in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the ADA, that federally funded services be provided in the most integrated setting appropriate. It also calls on federal, state, and local governments to advance community living, home- and community-based services, and competitive integrated employment. This bipartisan resolution is led by the co-chairs of the Bipartisan Disability Caucus. Please add your name as a cosponsor.I also urge you to support Senate ratification of the CRPD. The United States signed the treaty in 2009. It reflects principles already in U.S. disability law, including community integration under Olmstead, and ratification would let the United States participate fully in international efforts to protect the rights of people with disabilities. Please also support ratification of CEDAW, which the United States signed in 1980. CEDAW is the core international agreement against discrimination on the basis of sex. Ratification would align U.S. commitments with those of nearly every other country and strengthen efforts to address discrimination against women and girls. Please cosponsor H. Res. 1586 and publicly support advice and consent to both the CRPD and CEDAW. Thank you for representing our district.
