Demand Congressional Authorization for Military Operations and Impeachment Proceedings

To: Sen. Cantwell, Sen. Murray, Rep. Jayapal

From: A constituent in Seattle, WA

January 3

I am writing to demand that Congress immediately assert its constitutional war powers and initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump and his administration officials for conducting unauthorized military operations in multiple countries. The Constitution grants Congress alone the power to declare war, yet the Trump administration has launched military campaigns in Venezuela, Yemen, Iran, Somalia, and Nigeria without congressional approval. According to Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, Trump launched nearly as many airstrikes in five months as President Biden did in his entire term. In Somalia alone, the administration conducted 118 bombings in its first year, putting Trump on track to exceed the combined campaigns of Biden, Obama, and Bush. The Venezuela operation is particularly egregious. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered attacks on survivors clinging to shipwrecked boats, killing at least 104 people. Trump and Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller openly described this as a resource grab, demanding compensation for nationalized oil businesses. Trump declared a total blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers, with the military seizing at least two tankers. This mirrors the exact type of unauthorized military aggression we condemned Russia for conducting. Public polling shows 53% of Americans oppose the boat attacks and 63% oppose attacking Venezuelan soil. On Christmas Day 2025, Trump launched an undeclared war in Nigeria, firing over a dozen Tomahawk missiles at camps in Sokoto State. Former Rep. Justin Amash correctly stated that offensive military actions need congressional approval and that war decisions belong to Congress, not the president. Congress must stop abdicating its constitutional responsibility. I demand you immediately hold hearings on these unauthorized military operations, cut off funding for these campaigns, and begin impeachment proceedings against Trump, Hegseth, and other officials who have violated the Constitution. America's credibility and constitutional order depend on Congress fulfilling its duty as a check on executive power.
