Repeal Bathroom Restriction Laws That Harm Trans and Cis People Alike

To: Sen. Slotkin, Rep. Walberg, Sen. Peters

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

August 20

Repeal your state's bathroom restriction law. These laws don't protect anyone — they humiliate trans people, confuse cisgender people, and put law enforcement in the absurd position of questioning people about their bodies in public spaces. That is exactly what happened when a group of trans men protesting one such law used women's restrooms at a water park, following the law to the letter. Police spent 20 minutes interrogating them about their bodies before letting them go. The chaos doesn't stop there. In one documented case, a trans woman was charged for presenting the male-marked license that the very law she was complying with required her to carry. The charges were dropped, but the damage was done. A law that criminalizes people for following it is not a functioning law — it's a harassment tool. These laws are humiliating, and they only hurt trans and cis people alike. Your state should lead the way out of this mess, not deeper into it.
