Protect polling places from DHS and ICE enforcement

To: Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell

From: A verified voter in Seattle, WA

February 8

I urge you to act now to ensure that DHS and ICE are explicitly barred from conducting immigration enforcement operations at or near polling places during federal elections. Voting locations must remain protected civic spaces, free from fear, coercion, or intimidation. I know you already understand the danger here. The mere presence of armed federal agents near polling places has a chilling effect on lawful voters, especially in immigrant communities and communities of color. Allowing ICE anywhere near the polls would undermine public confidence in free and fair elections and suppress lawful participation—regardless of intent. I support clear statutory prohibitions on DHS and ICE activity near polling locations, transparent public guidance barring election-related enforcement, strong oversight, and the use of appropriations to enforce compliance. Thank you for continuing to lead on protecting voting rights and holding DHS and ICE accountable. Please keep pushing to ensure that federal law enforcement is never used—directly or indirectly—to interfere with the right to vote.
