Oppose Tariffs on Foreign Films and Art

To: Rep. Moore, Sen. Tuberville, Sen. Britt

The president has recently posted about putting a 100% tariff on foreign movies. There needs to be heavy opposition to this. Not only is this idea something that would be incredibly hard to enforce given just how globalized the film industry is and the platforms that distribute said films, it is a very cut and dry case of large government restricting free trade and telling me what I can and cannot buy, it would harm whole industries that are already hanging on by a thread, but it is also something only a weak fascist would do. No strong, confident leader would be afraid of foreign art contaminating the purity of their nation with, "messaging and propaganda" to quote his tweet. To lead, if the president wanted to bring more of the film/entertainment industry stateside, it would be much easier to give incentives to. I completely agree that the industry should rely much less on outsourcing, but punishing the consumer is not the answer on this. With the global nature of how films are made in the modern day, it might be recorded in one country, but planned in another, and the effects done in another. This is true for every country at every level. Most movies we think of in the US are filmed in either Canada, or New Zealand, then the effects are done in the UK or India. Where would the line be drawn on that one if it two thirds of it was made in a foreign country but it was written by Paramount? It's incredibly messy and would only cause MORE bureaucracy, something I believe the conservative party hates. Why does he think it's okay to punish me, the regular consumer, for buying something I want to buy? The entire base for the conservative philosophy is small government with free and open trade. This is clearly in direct and open defiance of that. This is government over stepping its bounds. There is an entire industry around importing media from Japan that's already in a very precarious monopoly with Sony owning the largest streaming and distribution platform in the US, Crunchyroll. The follow up is Sentai Filmworks, owned by AMC, by a very large margin. Then there are a handful of smaller, indie and boutique publishers/licensors such as Discotek Media in Florida that simply would not be able to survive this. You would be handing an entire industry to Sony, who could happily absorb that cost if it meant they'd be the only dog in town. If he's trying to help American industries, this would only harm them. Lastly, and most importantly, this is something only a weak fascist would do. And I don't say that lightly. I've mentioned multiple times that this is government overreach. Only a fascist leader that is afraid of their people learning about other cultures and art would overreach this far. There is no sugar coating it, punishing people for enjoying art from other cultures is fascism. That's an open and shut case. You must uphold conservative values of small government and free market and fight this blatant attempt to censor and block art.
