I urge you to pass the Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Act and return excess oil profits to American households through direct rebates.
Big Oil is profiting from the war with Iran while families pay more for gas, groceries, travel, utilities, shipping, and everyday necessities. Shell recently reported nearly $7 billion in quarterly profit after oil prices surged. Other oil and gas giants are also benefiting from higher prices and global disruption.
This is crisis profiteering. Oil companies are turning war, volatility, and consumer pain into another massive payday for executives and shareholders.
A windfall profits tax would ensure that excess gains caused by war-driven price spikes are returned to the households forced to pay those higher costs. During the 2022 oil price shock, a similar tax could have returned roughly $1,715 per household. With prices rising again, Congress should deliver at least that much relief, likely more.
