Condemn Trump’s January 6 Pardons

To: Sen. McCormick, Pres. Trump, Rep. Deluzio, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Pittsburgh, PA

January 22, 2025

I am writing to express my profound concern and opposition to President Donald Trump’s recent decision to pardon over 1,500 individuals convicted for their involvement in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This unprecedented action not only undermines the rule of law but also poses significant risks to our nation’s security and democratic principles. The January 6 insurrection was a violent assault on the very foundation of our democracy, resulting in injuries to over 140 police officers and causing extensive damage to the Capitol building. The Department of Justice had undertaken rigorous investigations and prosecutions to hold the perpetrators accountable, reflecting the severity of their actions. By issuing these pardons, President Trump has effectively nullified these efforts, sending a perilous message that such egregious conduct will go unpunished. Law enforcement organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, have condemned these pardons, stating that they “send a dangerous message that the consequences for attacking law enforcement are not severe.” This sentiment is echoed by officers who defended the Capitol, many of whom feel betrayed by a decision that disregards their sacrifices and the principles they swore to uphold. Moreover, experts warn that these pardons may embolden extremist groups, potentially leading to increased political violence. By absolving individuals who engaged in seditious activities, the administration risks legitimizing future acts of insurrection, thereby threatening the stability and security of our nation. In light of these concerns, I urge you to take a public stand against these pardons and to support legislative measures that reinforce accountability for actions that endanger our democracy. It is imperative that we uphold the rule of law and ensure that those who seek to undermine our democratic institutions are held responsible for their actions.
