The New York Times has become a vehicle for manufactured anti-trans panic, and I want you to publicly call it out. A rigorous analysis of 3,242 Times articles found that starting in 2022, the paper systematically amplified opponents of transgender rights, buried coverage of hundreds of anti-trans bills, and gave front-page placement to stories questioning gender-affirming care — care that every major medical association recognizes as best practice. This isn't editorial judgment. It's a pattern.
The consequences are real. Justice Clarence Thomas cited Times reporting in his June 2025 concurring opinion upholding Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Republican-led states and the Family Research Council have used Times stories in legal briefs. Meanwhile, a GLAAD/Media Matters review found the Times failed to quote any out transgender person in 66% of its articles on anti-trans legislation — and 18% of those stories included anti-trans misinformation without adequate fact-checking. The paper published more trans-related stories than any other major outlet while giving trans people the least voice.
This smear campaign didn't emerge organically. It was organized, amplified by a paper of record, and is now shaping law. Please use your platform to name what's happening and push back on the Times' role in legitimizing anti-trans pseudoscience.
