The unchecked flow of money into our elections from wealthy donors and special interests is drowning out the voices of ordinary Americans. The 2024 election saw spending records shattered, with billionaires and corporations pouring tens of millions into super PACs to boost candidates favoring their narrow agendas. Undisclosed "dark money" continues to surge, obscuring the true sources bankrolling many campaigns. Even more concerning, the voices of constituents are being diluted as congressional races become nationalized, with donors from outside districts and states wielding growing influence. To revive our democracy's first principles of political equality and accountability, we must get big money out of politics. Citizens United must be overturned to rein in unbridled spending by the wealthy few. Robust public financing of campaigns is vital to amplify the voices of the people over moneyed interests. And stringent disclosure laws are needed to illuminate the dark money corridors warping our elections. Only by implementing such sweeping reforms can we ensure our elections truly represent the will of the many, not the privileged few buying influence.
