An Open Letter

I strongly oppose the new USPS rule requiring voter information to be encoded in bar codes on mail-in ballots. This regulation raises serious concerns about privacy, security, and accessibility. Firstly, the inclusion of personal voter information in bar codes poses a significant risk to voter privacy. By embedding identifiable data, we open the door to potential misuse. Anyone with access to the bar code could potentially trace it back to individual voters, undermining the confidentiality that is fundamental to our democratic process. This threat is exacerbated by the increasing number of cyberattacks and data breaches we see today, making it crucial to safeguard voter information rather than expose it to potential exploitation. Secondly, this rule could create barriers for many voters, particularly the elderly and those with disabilities. Not everyone is tech-savvy or has easy access to the necessary tools to decode bar codes or understand how to navigate this new system. By complicating the voting process, we risk disenfranchising those who may already feel marginalized within our electoral system. Moreover, the implementation of this rule could lead to logistical challenges for USPS workers. Handling mail-in ballots with additional requirements could slow down the processing time, potentially delaying the delivery of ballots and, ultimately, the votes themselves. This inefficiency could undermine the very purpose of mail-in voting, which is meant to provide a more convenient way for citizens to participate in elections. In conclusion, this new USPS rule prioritizes bureaucratic efficiency over the protection of voters’ rights and privacy. Our electoral process must be transparent and secure, but it should also be accessible and respectful of individual privacy. We need to find solutions that uphold these values without compromising the integrity of our democracy.
