You must oppose the TAKE IT DOWN Act (S. 164/H.R. 633). While its motives sound positive (forcing non-consensual intimate imagery to be removed from websites), as written the bill has no safeguards to verify that the content even falls into that definition. It is already a federal crime to post such images, so nothing is accomplished through the bill. However, it offers a dangerous avenue into suppressing freedom of speech, given the lack of guardrails. President Trump has already indicated an interest in using the new law to punish individuals who say negative things about his presidency—quite a distance from the ostensible goal of the bill. The bill must be modified before it offers an acceptable shift to current policy and I urge you to oppose it until then.
