Subject: Follow-Up: Gun Violence and Policy Consistency Dear Representative Bresnahan, Thank you for your response. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. However, I feel that your answer did not address the core of my concern. I want to press this issue more directly: How can you say you're prioritizing public safety while supporting policies that make it easier to access firearms in a country already overwhelmed by gun violence? You mention enforcing existing laws, but the reality is: Background check loopholes remain, especially in private and online sales. Guns are frequently obtained illegally or with minimal oversight, even by individuals with violent histories. According to the Gun Violence Archive, over 9,000 gun homicides occurred in 2024 alone—mostly committed by American citizens, not immigrants. At the same time, your public messaging repeatedly centers undocumented immigrants as a major source of violent crime, despite state data (like Texas’) showing they commit fewer murders per capita than native-born citizens. This feels like selective concern. It sends the message that you’re willing to accept domestic gun violence and school shootings as the price of “freedom,” while making immigration a scapegoat for broader societal fears. I am not asking you to take anyone’s guns away. I am asking: Why won’t you take the epidemic of gun violence as seriously as you take immigration enforcement? Why isn’t expanding background checks, regulating high-capacity weapons, or preventing straw purchases part of your public safety agenda? I urge you to do more than offer thoughts and prayers. Please fight for policies that protect all Americans—especially our children—from preventable violence.
