I am writing to urge your opposition to the App Store Accountability Act. Though framed as a child safety measure, this bill would impose sweeping mandates on app stores that threaten user privacy and innovation. By requiring app stores to verify the ages of all users and obtain parental consent for minors, this legislation would force the collection of sensitive personal identifying information from every American who downloads an app, regardless of whether the app poses any risk to children. This creates massive data honeypots vulnerable to breaches and misuse. Furthermore, these requirements would create significant barriers for independent developers and smaller platforms, consolidating power among the largest tech companies that can afford compliance. I encourage you to oppose this bill and instead support privacy-respecting, narrowly tailored approaches to online safety.
