I am writing to express my views regarding the proposed Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act introduced by Representative Mark Takano and Senator Bernie Sanders. While I support the goal of modernizing work standards, I am concerned that federal changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act could negatively impact workers if strictly enforced without proper wage protections. When the federal overtime threshold drops from 40 to 32 hours, companies that strictly ban overtime will cut schedules to 32 hours. If the law does not legally mandate full pay preservation, workers will suffer an immediate 20% cut to their take-home pay. To prevent financial hardship, I urge you to support amendments to the Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act that: Mandate Wage Parity: Require that employees retain the exact same weekly take-home pay for 32 hours of work as they previously received for 40 hours. Require Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA): Mandate annual pay raises tied to the rate of inflation, ensuring that wage gains are not silently eroded over time, as any raise below inflation functions as a pay cut. Without explicit protections for overall pay and inflation-indexed adjustments, this legislation risks reducing working-class household incomes. Please ensure these protections are included before moving the bill forward.
