The Trump administration's refusal to comply with a Supreme Court order to facilitate the release and return of an American citizen mistakenly deported to El Salvador is an alarming disregard for the rule of law. Proposing to imprison U.S. citizens in El Salvador's notorious prisons known for torture, abuse, and inhumane conditions violates constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. This trampling of civil liberties and due process cannot stand. Upholding the rule of law and protecting the constitutional rights of all Americans must be prioritized over any unlawful expansion of executive power. The courts must act to rein in this overreach and affirm that no person is above the law.
