Outlaw Partisan Gerrymandering to Protect Fair Elections

To: Sen. Blackburn, Rep. DesJarlais, Sen. Hagerty

From: A verified voter in Rockvale, TN

August 20

I am writing to express my deep concern about the ongoing practice of partisan gerrymandering and to urge you to take immediate action to outlaw this undemocratic tactic. Recent events have highlighted the urgent need for reform in our redistricting process. On August 7, Vice President JD Vance met with Indiana Governor Mike Braun and other legislative leaders to discuss congressional redistricting for the 2026 midterm elections. While Vance framed this as a response to alleged Democratic gerrymandering, it's clear that both major parties engage in this practice to their advantage. This tit-for-tat approach undermines the very foundation of our representative democracy. In Texas, Republicans are working on redistricting efforts in response to Department of Justice concerns about racial gerrymandering in Houston and Dallas. Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers in other states are considering their own redistricting measures. This cycle of partisan map-drawing must end. The potential redrawing of more than a dozen Democrat-controlled districts, as discussed by Vance in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News' 'Sunday Morning Futures', demonstrates the far-reaching consequences of allowing gerrymandering to continue. Such large-scale manipulation of district boundaries can effectively disenfranchise countless voters and distort the will of the electorate. I urge you to introduce and support legislation that would make partisan gerrymandering illegal across all states. We need a standardized, non-partisan approach to redistricting that prioritizes fair representation and electoral integrity. This could involve the creation of independent redistricting commissions or the implementation of algorithmic methods that ensure districts are drawn without political bias. The integrity of our democratic process is at stake. By outlawing gerrymandering, we can ensure that every vote truly counts and that our elected officials represent the genuine will of the people. Please take action now to protect the cornerstone of our democracy: fair and equitable elections.
