The Senate has rejected the SAVE Act twice this year, both times with Republicans crossing over to block it. Hold that line. Vote no, and don't scrap the filibuster to force it through. The bill would make every American show a passport, certified birth certificate, or naturalization papers, in person, just to register to vote. The Brennan Center counts 21.3 million voting-age citizens who can't readily produce those documents.
It solves nothing. Noncitizen voting has been a federal crime since 1996, punishable by prison and deportation, and the cases are vanishingly few. The Brennan Center reviewed the Heritage Foundation's own fraud database and found 41 noncitizen cases over five decades. Utah checked its entire roll of more than 2 million voters in January and confirmed one noncitizen registration and zero noncitizen votes. Meanwhile the bill blocks real people. Around 69 million married women hold a birth certificate that no longer matches their legal name. Passport ownership runs lowest in West Virginia, Mississippi, and Arkansas, where most people don't have one. A veteran can't use a military ID alone.
The SAVE Act punishes citizens who've done nothing wrong to stop a crime that's already rare and already illegal. Keep voting against it, and refuse to scrap the filibuster to push it through. Tell me directly how you'll vote if it returns to the floor.
