Jokes are Free Speech

To: Rep. Burlison, Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt

I am writing to urge you to speak out against the FCC's order requiring ABC to file early license renewals for eight of its broadcast stations. This action that is clearly government retaliation against a broadcaster for airing a comedy joke. This is a First Amendment issue, plain and simple. The federal government has no business using its regulatory power to punish a news and entertainment network for content the president finds offensive. That is the definition of government-controlled media, something Americans across the political spectrum should oppose. The FCC's own licensing standards make it nearly impossible to actually revoke these licenses. This action isn't about public interest. It's about intimidation. I urge you to use your congressional oversight authority to demand accountability from FCC Chair Brendan Carr and make clear that weaponizing federal regulators against a free press is unacceptable.
