Protect Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante — Oppose Monument Reductions

To: Rep. Tonko, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A verified voter in Ballston Spa, NY

July 14

Oppose any effort to reduce Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments. Shrinking these monuments by 90% would be one of the most destructive rollbacks of public land protections in American history, and I expect you to stand against it. Bears Ears holds irreplaceable cultural and sacred significance to the Native American tribes who fought for its designation. Grand Staircase-Escalante protects some of the most remote and scientifically significant landscape in the country. Gutting their boundaries doesn't open land to the public — it opens it to extraction industries at the permanent expense of everyone else. These places, once damaged, don't recover on a human timescale. The Antiquities Act exists precisely to protect lands like these from short-term political decisions. I want to know where you stand. Will you defend these monuments, or will you let them be carved up? Your constituents in southern Utah — and the millions of Americans who visit and value these lands — are watching.
