While I unequivocally condemn political violence and agree that no one should be targeted for assassination, I am deeply troubled by the decision to honor Mr. Kirk with this solemn tribute typically reserved for distinguished public servants and national heroes. Throughout his career, Charlie Kirk made numerous public statements that were divisive, harmful, and contrary to the values of equality, dignity, and justice that Pennsylvania strives to uphold. His documented positions include: Promoting conspiracy theories about racial minorities and religious groups Making derogatory statements about LGBTQ+ individuals Spreading misinformation about democratic institutions and historical civil rights achievements Advocating for policies that would restrict the rights and freedoms of various communities As someone who has consistently stood against antisemitism, racism, and discrimination throughout your career, I find it deeply concerning that the Commonwealth would honor someone whose rhetoric often promoted division and intolerance. The decision to lower flags to half-staff is a powerful symbol that should reflect our state's highest values and honor those who have genuinely served the public good. While we must condemn violence against anyone, honoring individuals whose life's work included promoting harmful ideologies sends a troubling message to the communities he targeted with his rhetoric. I respectfully urge you to reconsider the criteria used for such honors and to ensure that future flag orders reflect Pennsylvania's commitment to equality, justice, and human dignity for all residents. I would appreciate clarification on the decision-making process for such honors and your thoughts on balancing the condemnation of political violence with the appropriate recognition of individuals whose public statements may have caused harm to vulnerable communities.
