H.R. 29 The Laken Riley Act

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet, Rep. Hurd, Pres. Biden

From: A verified voter in Glenwood Springs, CO

January 10

The National Immigration Law Center opposes H.R. 29, the Laken Riley Act, as it would impose excessive criminal penalties and mandatory minimum sentences related to fentanyl violations. This overly punitive approach fails to address the root causes of substance use disorders and does little to promote public health or safety. Instead of criminalizing individuals struggling with addiction, resources should be directed towards evidence-based prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies. Reject this misguided legislation that perpetuates failed drug war policies and prioritize humane, public health-centered solutions to the overdose crisis.
