Protect Congressional oversight authority, dismiss McIver indictment

To: Rep. Moolenaar, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

July 21

The prosecution of Rep. LaMonica McIver raises serious concerns about overreach and infringement on Congress's constitutional oversight authority. As an elected representative, McIver has a responsibility to conduct oversight of federal agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Obstructing or criminalizing that oversight undermines our system of checks and balances enshrined in our democracy. The charges against McIver appear to be an excessive reaction to her attempts to monitor activities at the ICE facility. Elected officials must be able to fulfill their oversight duties without delays and without fear of unjustified prosecution. Allowing this indictment to proceed sets a disturbing precedent that discourages robust congressional oversight going forward. Protecting that authority is essential to maintaining accountability and transparency in our government. Press for the charges to be dropped and demand unfringed oversight for elected officials.
