I am appalled that people acting as law enforcement these days are allowed to be masked and to not immediately present badges when interacting with the public. It is deeply concerning that law enforcement officers are allowed to conceal their identities and evade accountability through the use of face coverings while on duty. This undermines public trust and runs counter to principles of transparency in a democratic society. It’s also dangerous. How can the public trust that these “officers” actually are duly authorized law enforcement personnel and not just some J6er or other right-wing militia?
The recent disturbing incidents of unidentified federal agents detaining protesters in Portland, OR underscore the urgent need for federal legislation prohibiting this deceptive and unethical practice, as do the tragic murders and injuries of Minnesotan legislators. By enacting a federal "No Secret Police" law mirroring Senator Wiener's proposed bill in CA, Congress can safeguard civil liberties, protect the rights of peaceful assembly and free speech, and ensure law enforcement operates with appropriate oversight.
Failing to take decisive action now risks further eroding faith in public institutions and enabling escalating abuses of power. I urge you to prioritize the introduction and passage of such legislation to uphold fundamental American values of openness, trust, and justice for all citizens. Thank you.
