Pass a War Powers Resolution to End the Iran Conflict

To: Sen. Blackburn, Rep. Kustoff, Sen. Hagerty

From: A constituent in Brownsville, TN

April 18

Congress must immediately pass a war powers resolution to end this disastrous military engagement with Iran. The President has threatened to resume bombing Iran after Wednesday when the ceasefire expires, escalating a conflict that has already triggered the largest oil supply disruption in history and sent oil prices plunging below $90 per barrel. This administration launched an aerial campaign against Iran on February 28 without congressional authorization. Now we're watching the President threaten to "start dropping bombs again" while peace talks collapse and Iran fires on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. A fifth of the world's crude oil passed through that waterway before this war began. The economic damage is mounting, and American military action continues without any meaningful oversight. The Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. Trump's maximalist demands, including seizing 970 pounds of Iranian enriched uranium, have derailed negotiations and left shipping in chaos. His threat that Iran "can't blackmail us" while simultaneously blockading their ports shows exactly why Congress needs to reassert its authority. Pass a resolution now requiring congressional approval before any further military action against Iran.
