Defend Constitutional Birthright Citizenship, American Values

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Pres. Trump, Rep. Friedman

From: A constituent in Glendale, CA

January 21

Most Americans disagree with ending the longstanding policy of birthright citizenship in the United States. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found that 63% of voters believe any child born on U.S. soil should automatically receive citizenship, regardless of their parents' immigration status. This right stems from the 14th Amendment and has been upheld by the Supreme Court for over a century. Birthright citizenship is a fundamental part of our national identity and changing it would betray core American values. It would create a discriminatory system where some children born here are treated as second-class citizens based on their parentage. Millions of Americans, including high-profile figures like Senator Ted Cruz, would not be citizens if not for this principle. Rather than abolishing this constitutionally-protected right, we should focus on creating more legal pathways for undocumented immigrants, which 55% of voters support according to the same poll. Ending birthright citizenship is an extreme and unpopular measure that would only sow further division. I urge you to respect the will of the American people and our longstanding traditions of equality and inclusion by rejecting any efforts to undermine this vital citizenship policy.
