Opposition to Dismantling the Department of Education for Learning Disabilities

To: Pres. Trump, Rep. Kiley, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A verified voter in Nevada City, CA

February 5

I am writing as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to any efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education. As a key institution responsible for upholding educational standards, ensuring equal access to education, and protecting the rights of students with disabilities, its elimination would have devastating consequences—particularly for students with learning disabilities who rely on federal protections and funding for their education. The Department of Education plays a critical role in enforcing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring that students receive the support, accommodations, and specialized instruction they need to succeed. Without federal oversight, students with learning disabilities could face inconsistent and inadequate services, leaving them at a severe disadvantage. The loss of federal funding and accountability measures could lead to widespread educational inequities, disproportionately harming the most vulnerable students. I urge you to reject any proposals that would weaken or eliminate the Department of Education. Instead, I ask you to support policies that strengthen educational resources, uphold protections for students with disabilities, and invest in a system that gives every child—regardless of their challenges—the opportunity to learn and thrive. Please let me know where you stand on this issue and what actions you will take to protect the rights of students with disabilities. I appreciate your time and attention to this critical matter.
