Stop trying to repeal section 230

To: Sen. Durbin

From: A verified voter in Chicago, IL

March 8

I'm writing because I saw that you were on the Senate floor talking about repealing section 230 again. Evidently you are under the delusion that section 230 is causing a fentanyl epidemic, which is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. As a trans woman and someone who has been in the tech industry for 25 years, I know what getting rid of 230 will actually do. Especially in this administration, evidently intent on eliminating everyone who is not white and male from public, this is incredibly short-sighted. Eliminating section 230 will mean a cavalcade of lawsuits against social media companies where LGBT folks have communities. It will mean a torrent of red state AGs attempting to ban any mention of homosexuality or gender identity as "pornography". And that is just what they've already promised to do. With this administration, they could go after these companies for having users speaking out against Trump. I am no fan of these companies -- I'm angry you have let them get away with anticompetitive practices and the amplification of misinformation. But this is the most assinine thing to do right now. Handing this administration MORE power to police speech is ridiculous. Maybe you should talk to Senator Wyden about why getting rid of section 230 is a terrible idea -- he seems to understand. Maybe instead of trying to restrict speech you should focus on doing something about the dismantling of our institutions. My father was the head of the Midwest Regional Climate Center for years, and watching NOAA being torn about is infuriating. I urge you to give up this ill-conceived idea and worry about our actual problems right now.
