No Privacy-Threatening Online ID Checks in New York

To: Gov. Hochul, Assembly Member Magnarelli, Sen. May

From: A constituent in Syracuse, NY

January 22

While the desire to protect children online is certainly admirable, bills that weaken end-to-end encryption or require online ID checks threaten the privacy rights of New Yorkers. Online ID check laws combine surveillance and censorship. ID check systems are vulnerable to hacking putting our sensitive data at risk while unreliable and biased facial recognition technologies can deny New Yorkers access to large sections of the net. Requiring a website to implement an online ID check discourages users from interacting with it, harming both users and content creators. If you care about your constituents, you should oppose any bill that imposes age verification requirements or threatens end-to-end encryption and other privacy protections.
