Vote No on HB 754's Transgender Patient Database

To: Gov. Lee

From: A constituent in Cookeville, TN

March 21

Vote no on House Bill 754 when it reaches the floor next week. This bill would force clinics and insurance companies to report transition and detransition procedures to the Tennessee Department of Health, creating a government database containing private sexual health information, contact details, home addresses, and behavioral health conditions of transgender patients. Medical privacy is not negotiable. No other group of patients is required to have their procedures tracked in a state database. Representative Faison claims HIPAA compliance, but HIPAA compliance doesn't address the fundamental problem: the government has no legitimate reason to collect and store this sensitive information about a specific group of people based on their medical decisions. This database creates real risks. Once this data exists, there's no guarantee it stays secure or that future legislatures won't expand access to it. Transgender Tennesseans deserve the same medical privacy as everyone else. Their doctors, addresses, and health conditions are none of the state's business. Reject this surveillance. Vote no on HB 754.
