Honor Renee Nicole Good: Dismantle the Deportation Machine!

To: Rep. Mannion, Sen. Gillibrand, Sen. Schumer

From: A verified voter in Fayetteville, NY

January 9

The recent killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE in Minneapolis—on ground sacred to the memory of George Floyd—exposes an urgent truth: our immigration enforcement system is a lethal arm of state violence, acting with police to disproportionately target Black, Brown, and Indigenous people. This is not an isolated failure but a systemic outcome. Data consistently shows that ICE and CBP operate with a culture of violence and impunity, with fatal encounters documented for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues policies of destabilization and extraction in Latin America—from historical support for dictatorships to modern economic warfare—directly driving the migration it then brutally polices. We, the undersigned, demand you move beyond condemnation to transformative action. We call on you to legislate in line with justice and historical responsibility: 1. Initiate the abolition of ICE and defund border militarization, reallocating resources to community-based, non-carceral support systems. 2. Enact broad, automatic legalization and establish a right to remain, particularly for refugees from nations impacted by U.S. intervention. 3. End federal programs that fund and militarize local police, investing instead in life-affirming public goods. 4. Pass legislation to restrict U.S. economic and military interference abroad, acknowledging its role in displacing peoples. The moment requires more than reform. It demands an approach that dismantles the machinery of deportation and policing, addresses the root causes of displacement, and finally aligns our laws with the principles of dignity and repair.
