Cuts to NIH overheads will cost Ohio $194 million per year

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Latta

From: A constituent in Oberlin, OH

February 9, 2025

I am very concerned about how the proposed cuts to NIH overhead costs will affect universities in Ohio. In Ohio, six schools received more than $10 million from NIH in 2024 for a total of ~$700 million. Of that, $440 million went directly to research and $260 million went to facilities and administration. The new indirect cost rate would bring that to $66 million, a loss of $194 million. That is money that is going out of our state and it means that Ohioans will lose jobs, training opportunities, and resources. Please push back against the Elon Musk takeover of our federal science and research agencies. They will hurt our economy and our global competitiveness.
