Stop Authoritarian Spectacles

To: Rep. Huizenga, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

I need you to publicly oppose any proposal to flood airports with ICE agents. This isn't a security measure. It's authoritarian theater designed to humiliate and intimidate immigrants, Muslims, Black travelers, and anyone who looks or sounds like they might be a target. Airports are already spaces where people are tired, trapped, and surrounded by surveillance. Saturating them with immigration enforcement turns ordinary travel into checkpoints where the state can single out and harass people based on how they look or speak. This teaches everyone else to accept that some people deserve to be watched, stopped, and degraded in public. That's not safety. That's spectacle. This follows a familiar pattern: pick a marginalized group, flood the culture with panic about them, then use state power to make the threat feel physical and normal. We've seen this with trans people debated endlessly in media while real harm escalates. We've seen it with calls for more detention infrastructure that warehouses and disappears people into the system. Authoritarianism works by turning ordinary life into checkpoints and conditioning the public to stop caring about who gets targeted. I expect you to reject policies that normalize cruelty as order and refuse to fund this kind of fear-based governance. https://maciaftermidnight.substack.com/p/checkpoint-america
