The recent firing of at least 17 independent inspectors general across multiple federal agencies is deeply concerning and appears to violate federal law. The 2022 amendments to the Inspector General Act required the President to provide Congress with 30 days' notice and detailed reasoning before dismissing any inspector general. According to reports, no such notice or justification was provided, undermining these crucial oversight roles. Inspectors general serve as independent watchdogs to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse within federal agencies. Removing them without proper cause threatens government accountability and transparency. This action compromises the ability of inspectors general to fulfill their duties free from political interference or retaliation. I urge you to forcefully defend the Inspector General Act and demand that the administration comply with the law by providing the required notice and case-specific reasons for each dismissal. Congress must assert its constitutional authority as a co-equal branch of government to uphold this critical system of checks and balances. Failing to do so would enable unchecked executive overreach and erode vital safeguards against corruption and mismanagement. Robust oversight and adherence to the rule of law are essential for maintaining public trust in our democratic institutions.
