Hold the Executive Branch Accountable for Lies I am writing to urge immediate legislative action and oversight regarding the executive branch’s spreading of false narratives surrounding the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool repairs. When the administration publicly blamed "vandalism" for the damage to the Reflecting Pool, federal law enforcement acted on those claims. That false narrative directly led to an innocent citizen—former Olympian David Hearn—being wrongfully arrested and charged with felony vandalism. Recent court filings and contractor disclosures have now confirmed what took place: the failure was caused entirely by a rushed, flawed installation by the contractor, not criminal sabotage. Lying to law enforcement is a crime for ordinary citizens, yet executive officials faced no repercussions when their false public assertions weaponized the Department of Justice against an innocent person. Misleading the public and law enforcement to cover up administrative blunders directly harms American citizens. Congress must step in. Demand thorough congressional hearings to investigate how these false claims were transmitted to federal prosecutors, full transparency regarding the no-bid contracting process, and concrete legislative measures to ensure executive officials are held accountable when false statements lead to wrongful prosecutions. It is time to deliver real, tangible consequences for this pattern of deceit.
