An Open Letter

To: Sen. Ashby, Gov. Hochul, Assembly Member Bendett

From: A verified voter in Nassau, NY

May 15

I am writing to urge you to take immediate legislative action to overturn Citizens United and restore the integrity of our democracy by ensuring that political power belongs to people, not corporations. For too long, this ruling has allowed an unprecedented flood of dark money to drown out the voices of everyday citizens. When massive corporations and anonymous billionaires can spend limitless sums to influence our elections, the fundamental principle of one person, one vote begins to feel like a relic of the past rather than a living reality. I am asking you to show the same courage and leadership we recently saw in Hawaii by formally calling for a federal constitutional amendment to end this era of corporate personhood. Hawaii has set a powerful precedent by declaring that a corporation is not a human being and that money is not speech. They have reminded us that our government should be accountable to the people who live in our communities, not the special interests with the deepest pockets. Our state has a unique opportunity to join this growing movement and send a clear message to Washington. We need to restore transparency and fairness to our political process so that our elected officials can focus on the needs of their neighbors instead of the demands of their donors. I urge you to introduce or support legislation that puts our state on the right side of history. Please help us reclaim our democracy and ensure that the power of the people always outweighs the power of the purse.
