Oppose Restrictions on Gender-Affirming Care for Transgender Youth

To: Rep. Walberg, Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

October 30

I am writing to express my deep concern over the proposed rules that would severely restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth across the nation. These rules, set to take effect as early as July 1, 2026, pose a significant threat to the well-being and rights of transgender individuals, particularly our vulnerable youth. The proposed restrictions include barring nonprofits from qualifying for Public Service Loan Forgiveness if they provide gender-affirming care to minors, prohibiting federal Medicaid reimbursement for such care for anyone under 19, and preventing hospitals treating transgender minors from receiving any Medicaid funds. These measures, coupled with the ongoing push by House Republicans to ban federal funding for gender-affirming care nationwide, create a dangerous precedent that jeopardizes essential healthcare services. It is crucial to recognize that gender-affirming care is not just beneficial, but often lifesaving. Multiple studies have demonstrated the positive impact of this care on transgender youth mental health and suicide prevention. By restricting access to these vital services, we risk causing immense harm to an already vulnerable population. The chilling effect of these rules on healthcare providers is particularly alarming. Many hospitals and organizations are already choosing compliance over resistance, even before enforcement begins. This trend could make gender-affirming care inaccessible across much of the country, leaving transgender youth without the support and care they desperately need. I urge you to stand firmly against these proposed rules and any legislation that seeks to limit access to gender-affirming care. We must protect the rights and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their gender identity. By ensuring access to comprehensive healthcare for transgender youth, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate society that values the lives and mental health of all its members. Please take immediate action to oppose these harmful measures and advocate for the protection of transgender rights and healthcare access. The lives and futures of countless young people depend on your support and commitment to equality and medical rights for all.
