I write to you today as a concerned citizen alarmed by the persistent erosion of the rule of law in our country under the current Republican administration, in this case as it pertains to federal transparency and accountability.
Recent reports highlighting the administration’s use of Signal and similar encrypted messaging platforms to conduct official business raise serious questions about the preservation of federal records. I strongly support the calls for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to thoroughly investigate this issue and to ensure that every federal agency involved complies with the Federal Records Act.
The potential destruction or concealment of public records is not merely a procedural issue, it is a fundamental breach of public trust and democratic accountability. These actions undermine the transparency that is vital for a functioning republic and set a dangerous precedent for future administrations.
I urge you and your colleagues to support and prioritize oversight efforts that ensure all federal records, regardless of the medium or platform used, are properly retained and made accessible in accordance with the law. This includes holding any individuals or agencies accountable if they are found to have willfully violated recordkeeping statutes.
The integrity of our institutions depends on the consistent and fair application of the law no matter who is in power. I hope you will stand firm in defense of that principle.
Thank you for your continued service and attention to this urgent matter.
