You Were Elected to Be a Check on Executive Power — Act Like It

To: Sen. Schmitt, Sen. Hawley, Rep. Burlison

From: A verified voter in Springfield, MO

April 5

I am one of your Missouri constituents, and I am frightened. Not just by the actions of this administration, but by your silence in the face of them. The possibility of nuclear military action against Iran is not a fringe concern. It is being discussed openly. And yet I hear nothing from you about your role, your intentions, or your commitment to the constitutional limits on presidential war powers. You swore an oath to the Constitution, not to any president or party. That Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war. It created you as a check on exactly this kind of unchecked executive power. So I am asking you plainly: What are you doing to ensure that no military strike, nuclear or otherwise, happens without congressional authorization? What is your position? And if you have none, why not? Your constituents deserve answers. I deserve an answer. Please provide one.
