Federal Prosecutors Resign Over Renee Good Shooting Cover-Up

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Casar

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

January 13

Six federal prosecutors resigned from the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s office on January 13, 2026, including First Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson, who was leading major fraud prosecutions (New York Times, January 13, 2026). At least six more supervisors from the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division gave notice they’re leaving. They objected to the administration’s demand that they investigate Becca Good, the widow of Renee Good, who was shot and killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross in Minneapolis on January 7. The DOJ refused to treat the shooting as a civil rights investigation and blocked Minnesota state authorities from examining whether Ross acted lawfully. Video evidence analyzed by ABC News shows Good turning her steering wheel away from Ross just over one second before he fired three shots through her windshield (ABC News, January 10, 2026). This isn’t about immigration policy. It’s about prosecutors with decades of experience walking away because they’re being asked to abandon basic standards of accountability. We’ve lost hundreds of career DOJ attorneys over the past year due to political pressure. When experienced prosecutors appointed under both parties resign rather than comply with orders to target a shooting victim’s family while protecting the shooter, we’re watching the collapse of impartial justice. The DOJ opened a civil rights investigation into George Floyd’s killing within days during Trump’s first term. Now they won’t even allow state investigators to review this case. I’m asking you to demand transparency: Will you call for an independent investigation into Good’s shooting? Will you support legislation protecting career prosecutors from political retaliation? Rule of law means accountability applies to everyone, including federal agents. Your constituents want to know where you stand.
