I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose Senate Bill 3, which seeks to ban all consumable THC products in Texas. This legislation threatens not only the livelihoods of thousands of Texans but also the well-being of individuals who rely on these products for medicinal purposes.
Medicinal Benefits of THC:
Cannabis-derived THC has been shown to alleviate symptoms for a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans, in particular, have found relief from PTSD symptoms through the use of THC products. The Texas Compassionate Use Program currently allows low-THC cannabis for certain conditions, but its limited scope and accessibility issues leave many patients without viable options.
Economic Impact:
The hemp-derived THC industry in Texas supports approximately 50,000 jobs and generates significant economic activity. An outright ban would devastate small businesses and eliminate a burgeoning sector that has flourished since the 2019 Hemp Farming Act.
Public Safety Concerns:
Prohibition has historically led to the rise of unregulated black markets, posing greater risks to public health and safety. Rather than an outright ban, implementing stricter regulations—such as age restrictions, proper labeling, and quality control measures—would better protect consumers and maintain public safety.
I respectfully urge you to consider the detrimental effects Senate Bill 3 would have on both public health and the economy. Please vote against this bill and support a more balanced approach that includes regulation and oversight rather than prohibition.
