Position: I urge you to uphold election integrity and ensure fair, proportionate sentencing in politically sensitive cases.
As a centrist Democrat, I am writing about the Colorado Court of Appeals decision regarding former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters. Her conviction for election-related crimes was upheld, but her sentence was vacated on procedural grounds.
This case highlights three critical national problems:
1 Insider threats to election integrity: Officials who abuse their positions to undermine voting systems erode foundational trust.
2 Politicization of justice: Sentencing must be consistent and apolitical to maintain faith in the rule of law.
3 The corrosive spread of election denialism: This movement motivates lawbreaking and deepens polarization.
I urge you to:
• Support federal resources to protect election infrastructure from insider threats.
• Advocate for a justice system that is both firm against attacks on democracy and scrupulously fair in its procedures.
• Use your platform to condemn efforts to undermine election results while promoting evidence-based reforms.
Our democracy requires both secure elections and a justice system that commands universal respect. Please work toward these balanced goals.
Position (Reiterated): I support strong election security and fair, non-political application of justice.
