To: Rep. Sewell, Sen. Britt, Sen. Tuberville

From: A constituent in Birmingham, AL

July 14

As your constituent, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the increasing number of Cyclospora infections and gastrointestinal illnesses sweeping across the country. Cyclospora cayetanensis is a debilitating parasite linked to contaminated fresh produce that causes severe, prolonged, and recurring gastrointestinal distress.During the spring and summer months, cyclosporiasis cases frequently spike, yet health authorities often struggle to pinpoint the exact source or supplier of the contamination. This recurring public health threat requires federal lawmakers to act swiftly to protect consumers. As a constituent, I respectfully request that you support: Enhanced Surveillance: Increased funding and resources for the CDC, FDA, and local health departments to conduct rapid, on-the-ground epidemiological investigations. Supply Chain Accountability: Stricter safety enforcement and tracing for imported and domestic fresh produce to prevent contaminated food from reaching grocery stores. Public Education: Improved public health advisories and consumer education regarding foodborne illnesses. Please let me know what specific legislative actions you and your committee assignments are taking to improve food safety and safeguard public health this year. Thank you for your time, attention, and continued service to our community. I look forward to hearing from you.
